To ensure we captured the entirety of the solar energy value chain, we identified 7 critical business processes that define the operations of solar energy projects. For the purposes of this project, we considered all business processes from solar project design and planning through solar plant decommissioning. We did not consider upstream processes, such as the mining of raw materials (e.g., metallurgical-grade silicon) or the factory production of core components (e.g., photovoltaic cells).

Each business process represents a unique phase in the development and operations of a successful solar project. Solar industry companies and professionals may span more than one business process, though key considerations differ for each step of the process.
